Inside Line Promotions – CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (June 12, 2018) – Caleb Helms has a renewed sense of confidence thanks to a podium finish last Saturday at Atomic Speedway during an Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association event.
“It was the absolute best I’ve felt all year,” he said. “I think we made some gains.”
Helms qualified eighth quickest before he won a heat race from the pole starting position.
“We were really fast in the heat race,” he said. “We had the best time. It had sprinkled a bit before our heat so I don’t know if it made it a little faster. All night long the car was feeling pretty good.”
Helms lined up on the outside of the second row for the A Main.
“I got a good start and was quick on the bottom, but just couldn’t clear Brandon Wimmer in front of me,” he said. “I was trying to come off the bottom quicker than him rather than slide him. Danny Smith got by me on a lap I took off my line to try to pass Brandon.”
Helms maintained a top five throughout the race and he narrowly made it through a late-race incident.
“Brandon got in the wall and collected Danny,” he said. “I squeezed by them, but Danny’s car got my top wing. We restarted second, but we weren’t quite as good after the wing was damaged so one guy got by us.”
The third-place result tied Helms’ season-best outing and it marked his first podium since March.
“We ran the car we won the two races with last year,” he said. “We were really good with that car last year. We tried a few things on the setup and it worked really good.”
Helms will take that confidence into the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek, which features nine straight days of racing. The opening round is Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio.
The remaining Speedweek shows are Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio; Sunday at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio; June 18 at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio; June 19 at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; June 20 at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio; June 21 at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio; June 22 at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio; and June 23 at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio.
